You have the RIGHTS to:

Access all regular and special education records of the student.

Provide written permission for a special education evaluation.

Receive copies of all evaluation reports and progress reports.

Participate in the Team meetings and other related meetings.

Request an independent evaluation of the student at school’s expense.

Visit any proposed educational placement(s) to determine appropriateness.

Review and accept or reject the proposed educational program (in whole or in part).

Monitor the special educational services provided to the student.

File a complaint if you feel that the education laws or regulations, or a student’s rights are violated.

Pursue the appeals process, if necessary.

Review and accept or reject any proposed change in the educational program.
You have the RESPONSIBILITY to:
- Advocate for the student in special education matters.
- Respect the confidentiality of all records and information related to the student.
- Notify the program if you need to end your appointment.
Remember that after seeking opinions from school personnel, the student’s social worker, and/or other advocates, any decisions you make are to be yours alone, based on your independent judgment.
